Thornham a Photographic History of a Norfolk Village, a fascinating insight into the village as it was in the old days.

The book was published in 2006 by Thornham Local History Society and records the history of the village in old photographs from personal collections of old residents.

The stories have been brought to life by former local resident and former journalist Peter Oliver.

The book contains more than 300 old photographs and 168 pages and is available for sale at £12.50.

Village tales in the book include:

The 1881 shipwreck that turned into a romance when one of the rescued Norwegian crew stayed in Norfolk and married the landlord’s daughter of Thornham’s famous Lifeboat Inn.

Thornham’s Territorial soldiers who fought and die alongside Captain Frank Beck’s Sandringham men at Gallipoli in 1915.

The 19th Century days when Thornham had its own trading vessel the Jessie Mary.

Village smugglers “at dead of night”

The day Sir Donald Bradman sent his best wishes to Thornham’s cricket skipper.

The 19th century Lady of the Manor who started an ironworks and won patronage across the Empire.
